About Patan

There are numerous ancient temples in the town illustrating the traditions of Hindus. There is one 1000 year ancient Kali temple from where Kali Mata, the Kuldevi (family goddess) of the Solanki dynasty, guards the town. Furthermore, there is Sahasralinga Talav in the town depicting the history. It is typically called ‘lake of a thousand lingas' which is constructed to distribute water from Saraswati.

History of Patan

The city of Patan is believed to be founded by Vanraj Chavda who is the foremost king of Chavda dynasty. The name of city had a secret that it was named ‘Patan’ after the king laid the foundation at this place pointed out by Anahil, who was a shepherd friend from his childhood days.

It was capital of Gujarat for about 650 years. The town was believed to be ruled by numerous dynasties including the Chavda, Solanki, and finally Vaghela. The Patan was established as a trade hub, learning and architectural achievements under Solanki rule. The Solanki kings appointed a massive number of Hindu and Jain temples, and other civic and religious constructions.

The town of Patan was destroyed by commander under Alauddin Khilji, Ulugh Khan towards the end of 13th century. Hence, the capital was shifted to Ahmedabad, leaving Patan as a shadow of its former glory. In present times, Patan is recognized for Sahasralinga Talav and Rani Ki Vav and are located at a distance of 2 Km towards northwest of the old-world town. Patan is famous for Patola saris which every lady would dream to wear. It takes around four to six months to prepare one sari and hence, it reflects the traditions of Gujarat. At present, there is only family which weaves beautiful patola saris and are loved across country.

By road: Visitors can travel by road to Patan either in privately owned taxis or interstate buses. Buses from Ahmedabad take 3.5 hours to reach Patan whiles buses from Mehsana reach Patan in 1 hour.
By rail: Visitors can travel by train to Mehsana and then take bus to get to Patan.
By air: Visitors can travel by air till Ahmedabad.

The best time to explore Patan is between the months of October and March. The weather is pleasant and best suited to explore the cultural heritage of this ancient fortified town.
